While some people consider the lemon-lime flavor of this soda aisle staple uniquely refreshing, others might find that it tastes a bit like sweet medicine.

But whether you’re a 7-Up fan or not, you might be surprised to learn that the original version of this carbonated drink actually contained a stimulant drug. Invented in 1929 by soft drink manufacturer Charles Leiper Gregg, 7-Up’s original name was Bib-label Lithiated Lemon-lime Soda.

The term “lithiated” referred to its lithium citrate content, an upper used by doctors to treat manic states and bipolar disorder.

However, in 1948, the US FDA banned the use of lithium in beverages, so in 1950, the company upped its game and overhauled 7-Up’s formula.
